In this blog, we break down the basics of boating, addressing common questions and concerns to ensure your journey on the water is safe, enjoyable, and unforgettable.
Going boating for your next holiday
With its unique appeal to beginners and travel enthusiasts alike, a boating holiday offers a gateway to a world of exploration. Whether it's a serene river cruise as a couple or a family-friendly holiday, boating has various delights and benefits, setting the stage for a magical experience.
Is boating safe for beginners?
What type of boat is suitable for beginners?
All our boats are suitable for beginners and none require a license. Selecting the perfect boat for your holiday is therefore not about your abilities, but about which boat will suit your group type and size, and whether you’re after specific features. For example, if being able to hook up to shore power is essential to you, you’ll want to choose from our Comfort, Comfort Plus, or Premier boat categories. If a barbecue hotplate is a must for your al fresco dinner, you’ll want to look at our Comfort Plus and Premier ranges.
Many of our boats are equipped with bow (and stern for Horizons) thrusters that are helpful when maneuvering. If you feel this feature might give you more confidence as a boater, do look out for models with this feature!
Start by thinking about the size of your group and who you’ll be boating with and, with the help of our boat comparison page, you’ll be able to tailor your choice to match.
How do I navigate the water?
In general, navigating the water as a beginner involves grasping the basics of techniques and tools, and learning fundamental navigation techniques such as chart reading and landmark utilization, is essential for steering with confidence. Familiarize yourself with tools like compasses and GPS devices, which serve as invaluable aids on the water.
The good news is that you don’t need to learn any of this before booking a Le Boat holiday. All you’ll need to do is watch our safety video. When you arrive at our base to start your trip, you’ll be taken through a thorough induction process showing you how to operate the boat and teaching you everything you need to know to have an enjoyable and safe time on the water. You’ll also be provided with a navigation guide that is easy to follow and gives you all the navigation information you’ll need!
What equipment do I need?
With essential safety equipment and gear, we have non-negotiables: life jackets, fire extinguishers, a well-stocked first aid kit and navigation tools. Rest assured; you'll find these crucial items already on board with Le Boat.
How do I moor a boat?
Boat mooring is the process of securely stopping a boat at a dock or shore using anchors, lines, or buoys to prevent drifting. Learning how to properly moor a boat is a foundational skill for any boater. Rest assured that our experienced team is dedicated to teaching you this essential skill at check-in!
What do I need to pack for my first boating trip?
For a successful first boating trip, focus on the essentials that combine safety and comfort. It's crucial to embrace the mindset that there is no bad weather, only bad clothing; it’s all part of the adventure. So check the weather forecast, pack for all weathers, including waterproofs, - and prioritize safety and preparedness. Whether you’re going on a canal boat holiday or a river cruise, we’ll help you prepare for your holiday.
